Pastor Gasnel Anilus reported that elementary classes at the Marechal school restarted after Easter and kindergarten classes may restart next week.

Previously reported:
Martin Horeis and Bill Roen visited Haiti March 15-19. They stayed at Sue Witt’s orphanage in Port au Prince and visited both the Marechal and Heroes of Savannah Schools. They found that the damage at the Heroes of Savannah School is minimal—primarily to the wall. The damage to the Marechal school is much more severe. As Pastor Gasnel Anilus reported in the last month, the two-story building which housed the kitchen, cafeteria and three classrooms was examined by experts and had to be demolished. That work is underway. We have had a temporary structure containing three classrooms built so that when the Haitian Education Ministry allows schools to re-open we will have classroom space. The International Village of Hope has also purchased a charcoal stove for preparing hot lunches and the children are once again receiving a hot meal each school day. The other buildings at the Marechal school are also compromised. Aftershocks have exposed cracks in those buildings. At every aftershock, more cracks appear and existing cracks are become larger. Under the circumstances, it may not be safe to use these buildings for classrooms for the children. Looking toward the future, the board is investigating the possibility of moving shipping containers to Marechal and adapting them to use as kitchen/storage/classrooms.
Based on the information Pastor Jean Gasnel Anilus has so far, one student and the principal at Marechal school were killed. The building housing classrooms and the kitchen facilities at the school was damaged and must be demolished. He sent these photos. On the positive side, Mama Carol’s well is OK. One of the students of the Heroes of Savannah school in Leogane was killed and part of the wall at the Heroes of Savannah School was damaged.
Sue Witt sent her thanks our prayers and support. She, the staff and children are fine. They rebuilt their security walls and are now safe. They still sleep outside. They have water but it is not safe to drink. Another missionary gave her a machine to purify the water. But they need to run the generator to pump the water. She has been busy flying children out of Haiti, using MAF (Missionary Aviation Fellowship) and private planes. They will use American Airlines when it starts flying into Port au Prince again. She has three little girls that may be impossible to get out since they do not have birth certificates.
Both Pastor and Anilus and Mrs. Witt report that costs have risen dramatically.

Recognizing that the staffs of the schools and orphanage are dealing with unimaginable issues and that having money to obtain scarce supplies should not be one of them, we will continue paying staff salaries at the same rate as before the earthquake. In addition, we will send three months salary to the family of Marie Yanique Celestin, the principal of the Marechal school who was killed.

Please keep Pastor Anilus and the staff of the two schools, Sue Witt, the children they serve and all of the Haitian people in your prayers.
